Just over a week ago I learned that I get to expand my literacy opportunities with more children as I teach sixth grade language arts to 88 eleven and twelve year olds! I am looking forward to all I will learn through this new adventure!
I will continue to consult with families in the area of early literacy and provide the Book Exchange for children through the Learning to Read by Reading program. My goal will be the same - Learning to Read by Reading and in many cases Learning to Read BETTER by Reading!
Just the other day I asked the daycare children what they liked best about coming to Kristyn’s as they sat on the sectional in the family room. Each one shared with ideas such as: Legos, the food, slime, Lincoln Logs, playing downstairs, etc. When it came to the last child, 3 ½ year old Maeve confidently said, “I like reading books.” All the other children responded with, “Oh, yeah!” “Yeah!” like how could we forget that?
Creating an environment where children are excited about reading has been rewarding! I hope that I can create that same enthusiasm for reading amongst the sixth graders I will soon meet!
You have an opportunity to promote reading too. Reflect on what that looks like for you, embrace it and make a difference!
